The Swiss National Museum in Zurich contains Switzerland’s largest collection of objects regarding the cultural history of Switzerland. Its exhibition covers all periods, from prehistory to the 21st century. The building was officially inaugurated in 1898. Its young architect, Gustav Gull, was able to push through his choice of a location for the National Museum, his own city of Zurich. The building is distinguished by its use of stylistic elements from various historical periods, which it fuses into something new, a reflection of the historicising spirit of the age.
